INCISE: Integrated Energy using Concentrated Solar Power for Petroleum Extraction
By Yu Na-Bi

As the third decade of the 21st century begins, oil and gas companies are now confronting a rethink of strategy amidst the energy transition era. From the COP 25, actions on greenhouse gas reduction to date seem insufficient in holding the global temperature increase below 1.5°C, and the industry has been viewed as a laggard on this issue. Meanwhile, solar energy leads the growth of renewables at 20.5%, with declining costs of around 82% from 2010-2019. Those reasons become a huge intimation for the industry to no longer face renewables as a competitor but take the opportunity by incorporating to elevate its efficiency while simultaneously addressing the emissions problem. Therefore, INCISE is here as the solution for answering those challenges.
INCISE is an integrated method of concentrated solar power (CSP) application on thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Simply by replacing the natural gas combustion with solar energy as the heat source in steam generation, INCISE can cut-off the emission made from conventional thermal EOR activity. INCISE can produce heat from the sunlight by using CSP power tower system up to 1,832°F. The heat then will turn the water into steam and be injected to the reservoir using intermittent injection between hot water and steam itself. In addition, to validate our idea is feasible, a reservoir simulation using CMG was run and discussed between a total of three different scenarios: continuous injection using gas combustion; continuous injection using solar; intermittent injection using solar to obtain the most effective and efficient scenario, then the economic indicator was examined to confirm that this solution is profitable and feasible. In turn, seeking for future advancement of the oil and gas industry is essential, but figuring out one idea to get there is an even urgent matter. Amidst energy transition, we need an unprecedented collaboration between renewable energy and petroleum industry. We believe, INCISE is a perfect solution to ensure that the industry is thriving, not only surviving. Therefore, visions towards cleaner and more efficient low-carbon energy systems resembled in SDGs point 7 & 13 are ready to be accomplish.

InvictusAQUA
By InvictusAQUA

Solving the plastic pollution problem is one of humanity’s greatest missions. Never- ending industrial development has lead to a gargantuan amount of plastic pollution making its way to Earth’s once clean hydrosphere. This has not only affected precious marine life and aquatic ecosystems, but also indirectly impacted the health of mankind, as plastic degrades to toxic substances in water and ends up accumulating in food sources. Yet, recent technological advancements have given rise to improved designs and ways to clean plastic from water bodies. However, such engineered machineries have presented their own limits. That is why we at INVICTUS, a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Student Team, have innovated the InvictusAQUA. InvictusAQUA is a practical & green technology-based, plastic clean-up innovation. The main source of energy to operate the InvictusAQUA encompasses Geometric-based vertical solar panels and a hybrid rechargeable battery layer to successfully clean plastic for up to one week in its single trip. This design will utilize compactness using shredders breaking plastic rubbish, thus reducing the volume occupied and increasing the storage capacity. Furthermore, InvictusAQUA technology will entwine autonomous systems as well as sophisticated components like FLIR thermal imaging, safe acoustic fish deterrents and bubble mechanisms to maximise water surface plastic collection, while safeguarding aquatic life. It is hoped that InvictusAQUA progresses to become society’s leading water surface plastic clean-up solution, with unique parking hubs at ports around the world. Hence, INVICTUS aims to associate with organizations on the same mission to remove plastic waste from the world’s oceans, seas and rivers.

Aqua Tower
By PNB 4000

In a world where one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, our Aqua Tower is the perfect solution. Fully utilizing green energy enables the sustainability of Aqua Tower in terms of society, environment as well as economy. It is a self-automated solar water desalination system that is powered by solar energy. Desalination is the process of removing salt and minerals from sea water to make sure that it is safe for human consumption. The desalinated water is guaranteed free from contamination. Equipped with a pyramid shaped glass roof that enables the focus of sunlight, the Aqua Tower always produces desalinated water efficiently. Fully powered by solar power makes our Aqua Tower maintenance fee to be as low as zero. Only build up cost is needed and the whole system is powered by solar energy. Therefore, the system can run continuously without additional charges. Another remarkable feature from our design is the subsurface water intake technique included which is used to ensure minimal damage towards the marine life. Cleaning the tank will never be hard with an automatic flushing system. We, team PNB 4000, are looking forward to helping the residents of seaside with our Aqua Tower.
