Smart Reading Device

According to the Global Sustainable Development Goals list by the United Nations, the fourth goal aims at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. Our focus in this project is there are still many disabled people who do not get proper and quality education in this society due to lack of accessibility, both in terms of physically inaccessible school buildings and expensive learning devices for spatial learning programs. Therefore, the problem statement we mentioned needs to be solved to achieve the sustainable development goal stated by introducing smart education. Even though nowadays there are many smart learning devices invented and available in the market, it is expensive, and many people cannot afford to buy the device. Our project will introduce you to an economic smart reading device designed for visual disabilities. This “Smart Reading Device” is designed to help the visual difficulties people to read the text in books or products which is written in the English language. These kinds of inventions consider a solution to motivate students who have visual difficulties to complete their education despite all their difficulties and encourage elder people who have weak eyesight to have lifelong learning. The task of the device is to scan any text image by pressing the button to capture the text image and convert it into audio text, so the user will listen to the audio through a headphone that’s connected to the device. By having this device, user can also read and learn by himself or herself without other people’s guidance and help. It proves that this designed device has met the theme which is smart education by using some cheaper components to help the disabilities in the education field.

About Us

Run by undergraduates from USM IEEE student branch with the guidance of our counselor Dr Rosmiwati, we are the main members of IEEE USM Student Branch.
Innovation and development. Both words represent the core of USM IEEE student branch. We offer our members in USM opportunities to develop a multitude of skill sets and networking opportunities in preparation to face challenges in future career in engineering. Conferences, competitions, technical workshops, industrial visits are one of the few activities that we have conducted to encourage and empower the new generation of Malaysia’s graduates.
Here, as a USM IEEE Student Branch, we provide a platform to connect the undergraduates and postgraduates alike with representative from various companies. Most of our members have an early exposure to their related working field, thus our members are able to develop themselves well before graduation.
As our society’s pace is growing, we believe that the only way to truly know USM IEEE Student Branch is to join us as part of our team.
